Facing Feminism: Feminists I Know
Art in Place
Artists Annette Marie Hyder, JoAnne Makela, and Jasmine Rain Hyder held an event that aimed to reframe and redefine the way people view feminists and think about feminism.
The “Facing Feminism: Feminists I Know” exhibition came about through a desire to counter stereotypes of feminists and feminism propagated by mass media. Clichés and tired tropes about feminists and feminism are prevalent not only across the nation and globally but in our own backyards and neighborhoods too. Using portrait art and words to create new “snapshots” that comprise a collage of the many facets of feminists and feminism rather than one single representation will illuminate the diversity inherent in feminism, redefine the popular conception of what it is to be a feminist and introduce feminists who live, work, and create along the light rail corridor, to the public.
Participants in the project provided a photo of themselves along with a text expression of what feminism means to them. These two elements are combined into a unique “photoem” that is added to the collection at large and displayed in the Lyric Lab, along the light rail corridor. This added color, interest, and provocation for thought and discussion. This art exhibit engaged the public in a dynamic and interactive way with a slideshow, props and live poetry and musical performances.
